There are two new articles over at A List Apart today: High Accessibility Is Effective Search Engine Optimization and Design Choices Can Cripple a Website.

The first, by Andy Hagans, talks abut Search Engine Optimization (SEO) with regard to accessibility. He says to think of search engines as “… users with substantial constraints: they can’t read text in images, can’t interpret JavaScript or applets, and can’t ‘view’ many other kinds of multimedia content.” It’s an interesting premise and even seems to be supported by Google

Nick Usborne starts out strong in the second article with this statement:

However compelling the message, however great the copy, however strong the sales argument… the way a page is designed will have a dramatic impact on conversion rates, for better or for worse. - Nick Usborne

And he’s right. Content is, of course, king. It’s what keeps your visitors coming back for more, but if your site’s design impedes their ability to access that content, the results can be disastrous. Nick goes on to break down three sample pages and the resulting ROI of each.
